What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant consists of three different parts: the implant, the abutment, and the restoration. The implant replaces the root of the missing tooth. After being surgically placed, it fuses to the jawbone in a process called “osseointegration.” After a few months of healing, the abutment and restoration are placed. This way, it will appear that you were never missing a tooth at all! If you are hoping for a permanent, natural-looking solution to tooth loss, dental implants are likely the solution for you!
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Out of all the dental treatments you can undergo, getting dental implants is one of the more complex, but we can assure you that results are worth your time and effort. We can walk you through each step so that you know what’s coming next and what to expect. Overall, the steps toward a complete smile include consultation and planning, the placement surgery, osseointegration, and then restoration. For more details, read the rest of this section.
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
Before a building can be constructed, a plan must be drawn up. The initial consultation is just as important in dental implants. This meeting allows Dr. Gabrielle to inspect your mouth for any existing problems, such as gum disease, that could interfere with your implants’ success. She can also answer questions you may have about the implants process. For the placement, you’ll also need to meet with one of our trusted specialists that we often collaborate with. They can explain the game plan for the surgery.
Dental Implant Surgery
Although it is considered a minor procedure, implant placement is still surgery. As a result, you’ll need to take a few days off work to recover. Your surgeon will give you a complete list of instructions to help you heal without complications. We work with these experts to give you the best possible treatment and results.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment
After the surgery, an important process occurs below the gums called osseointegration. In this stage, the implants stimulate new jawbone growth, and they become fused together. This gives your replacement teeth stability and strength. In total, this process usually takes between three and six months to complete.
When your implant posts are fully integrated, the surgeon will then insert a connector piece called an abutment, which will stick out through the gum tissue. At that point, you’ll return to our office.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)
Following your abutment placement, we will take impressions of your upper and lower arches. These impressions are sent to a dental lab, where a model of your mouth is created to make your custom restoration(s). When they are ready, you’ll come and have a completely new smile!
Benefits of Dental Implants
Over 500,000 dental implants are placed every single year! Dental implants are becoming more and more popular, and it is no wonder why. Thanks to their unique placement in the jawbone, dental implants provide an array of important benefits that cannot be achieved through traditional dentures and dental implants. Here are just some of the ways that dental implants can improve your confidence, health, and quality of life.
Day-to-Day Benefits
Once the healing process is over, you shouldn’t be able to distinguish your dental implant from a natural tooth. You may even forget that it isn’t one of your natural teeth! Here are some of the wonderful benefits that you can experience every day:
- Easy to Maintain: You care for dental implants in the same way that you would care for any other tooth. Brush twice, floss, and rinse your mouth with mouthwash every day. You should also continue to schedule regular cleanings and checkups.
- Stronger Bite Force: When you get dental implants, your bite force can be restored up to 90%! This is much more than what you can expect with dentures or dental bridges.
- Improved Confidence: If you have gaps in your smile thanks to tooth loss, it can be easy to feel self-conscious about your smile. With dental implants, you don’t need to hide from the camera anymore, as you can show off your pearly whites with pride!
Health Benefits
Dental implants have a positive influence on health. Here are some of the ways your dental implants can benefit your entire body:
- Prevents Jawbone Deterioration: When you are missing teeth, your jawbone isn’t being stimulated through regular chewing, so it will eventually be reabsorbed by the body. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option out there that replaces the roots of the missing teeth, therefore stimulating the jawbone and preventing bone loss.
- Improved Dental Health: Missing teeth can increase your risk of other dental problems. This includes gum disease, misalignment, and additional tooth loss. Dental implants help to prevent these negative effects from occurring and worsening.
- Better General Health: Dental health and general health go hand-in-hand. Improved dental health can reduce your risk of several life-threatening health conditions, like diabetes and heart disease.
Long-Term Benefits
Dental implants have a higher cost than traditional dentures and dental bridges, but there are good reasons for this. Dental implants are an investment in the future of your smile. Here are some of the ways that you can benefit from dental implants for several decades into the future:
- Long-Lasting: Other tooth replacement options, like dentures, need to be relined or replaced every few years. Dental implants are made to last for many decades when they are cared for properly. It could even last for the rest of your life!
- Save Money: Dental implants last a long time, so you don’t have to worry about spending money to replace them. They also prevent dental issues from occurring, reducing your expenses in the long run.
- High Success Rate: Dental implants have an astonishing success rate of over 95%!
Dental Implant Considerations
There are several factors that Dr. Gabrielle will consider before recommending dental implants. Some of these include:
- Adequate bone support to anchor the implant
- Healthy gum tissue
- Sinus and nerve location
- Overall health, including any chronic illnesses
In some cases, your dentist may recommend advanced treatment for your upper or lower jaw. Your individual plan will be based on your unique needs and goals for your healthy smile.
Dental Implant FAQs
What Can Cause Dental Implants to Fail?
In the rare case that dental implants fail, it’s usually for one of two reasons. The first has to do with a failure of the implant to fuse with the jaw, a process known as osseointegration. This usually happens if you have an impaired capacity to heal, like in the case of diabetics or cancer patients. Such failure may also occur if you put too much pressure on the abutments while they’re healing.
The second thing that can cause dental implant problems is infection, which is usually a consequence of advanced gum disease. For this reason, we’ll treat you for any signs of gum disease before providing you with your implant, and you should maintain your dental hygiene in order to ensure that bacteria don’t settle in.
Am I Too Young to Get Dental Implants?
If a dental implant is placed in a still-growing jaw, it could lead to a host of complications. Premature implants may interfere with bone development. The bone may also grow normally, leading the dental implant to come loose.
For these reasons we typically will not place dental implants until people’s jaw has fully developed, which typically happens after the age of 18. Some people may need to wait until their mid-20s to get dental implants, with men typically needing to wait longer than women do.
Am I Too Old to Get Dental Implants?
On the other hand, however, you are never too old to get a dental implant. Studies show that seniors in good oral health have the same rate of dental implant success as anyone else.
Older patients may be more likely to have oral health problems that could compromise the integrity of their implant; for example, seniors have a dramatically increased risk of gum disease. However, so long as we deal with these issues before your surgery, you should be able to get a dental implant no matter your age.
How Long Does It Take to Recover from Dental Implant Surgery?
Typically, patients are able to resume normal activities as soon as the day after dental implant surgery. The procedure is fairly low impact, meaning that you don’t have all that much to worry about in regards aftercare. Any bleeding or swelling should stop after a few days, and you should be able to handle any discomfort with either OTC or prescribed pain medicine.
The only caveat is that you ought to avoid strenuous exercise for around a week after the surgery, as increased blood flow could cause bleeding. If your job involves hard labor, you may want to take a few days off after you get your dental implants.
